Internship Program

The Stations have internship programs available in Promotions, Programming, Production/News, Computer/Networking, and Sales.  Local colleges, community colleges, and high schools have provided us with unpaid interns, who receive college/class credit for their service.

Staff members frequently speak to communication/broadcast classes at community colleges to educate them about radio career opportunities and internships.

During the period of October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2008 we recruited interns from the following schools:  Bellevue Community College (1), Central Washington University (1), Seattle Pacific University (1), University of Washington (16), University of Southern California (1), Northwest University (1).

University of Washington Bothell Career Fair, UW at Bothell.  Department Heads that participated were Cindy Gilsdorf, Promotion Director KWJZ/KKNW; Annie O'Dell, Promotion Director KQMV/KIXI; and Heather Gardner, Promotion Director KRWM. Other Venues of Outreach

Jackson Street Music Program – A non-profit organization in Seattle whose goal it is to inspire youths creativity as well as their social and cultural productivity through the art of music.  JSMP partners and works in conjunction with Seattle's arts and education communities.  JSMP participants actively engage in conversation with artists and educators.  They then use their creative and critical thinking skills to provide a written reflection of their experience.  On August 20, 2008 Marc Kaye (General Manager) and Carol Handley (KWJZ Program Director) spoke to 20 high school students as a part of the Jackson Street Music Program Academy.  They spoke about Sandusky Seattle and its radio stations.  Carol also spoke specifically about being a Program Director at KWJZ and the process for producing our benefit CD sampler.  They toured the stations and studios.  This was part of a "summer academy" produced for participants of the JSMP.  Sandusky has been a supporter of the program by publicizing fundraising activities of the organization and it has been a past recipient of the proceeds from the KWJZ Benefit CD sampler.

Green River Community College  – April 21, 2008 Cindy Gilsdorf, Promotion Director KWJZ/KKNW and Taylor Westphal, Promotion Coordinator KWJZ/KKNW spoke to a Journalism 255 class.  Cindy talked about Promotions and Marketing in general.  Taylor spoke about interning at KWJZ.  Employees conducted a 40-minute seminar with the students.  The students were then given a chance to ask question.  Director of Broadcast Operations/Instructor, Tom Evans Krause made the arrangements for us to speak.

Boy Scouts of America –A tour for scouts for those young people earning communication merit badges during the summer.  A troop scheduled a tour to see our studios and learn about broadcasting. (Ryan Digges, Promotion Coordinator KQMV/KIXI) Excellent community relations and educational for future broadcasters.
